Illustration is a time-honored way of telling a story. From the time of the cave paintings of Lascaux which illustrated a hunt that took place over 17,000 years ago to the books of E.H. Shepard and Antoine de Saint-Exupery in the early 20th century, illustration (that is, graphically visualizing a figure or narrative through a variety of media—including pen drawing, painting, and even photography) has a long tradition that is often tied with literature. Stories like those of Lewis Carroll or Neil Gaiman come to life through the work of John Tenniel and Yoshitaka Amano. Removed from their narratives, however, and illustration becomes a true art form, requiring the skill and vision of a talented artist to be engaging.
In the Philippines, an artist collective has been illustrating the works of famous children’s book authors for years. Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (Ang InK) is an organization of Filipino illustrators who share a passion for creating excellent quality illustrations for children. Ang InK artists create art for books, magazines, advertising, animation, graphic and web design, and include full-time freelance illustrators, graphic designers, painters, animators, product designers, writer-illustrators, teachers, as well as students in visual arts, and artists working in publishing companies, design-related firms and advertising agencies. Being young at heart is what binds Ang InK members together while they conjure magical and whimsical, colorful worlds with their pens and paint brushes.
This Saturday, December 5, Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan will open its Annual Exhibit for 2015 at Galerie Stephanie in Libis, Quezon City. Entitled “TWICE: Ang INK 2015 Annual Exhibition,” sixty Ang INK artists will be contributing a matching pair of artworks, showcasing an exciting combination of styles. Participating artists from Ang INK include Abi Montana-Santillan, Al Estrella, Alyssa De Asis, Arlene Sy, Benedict Reyna, Bleps Dapo, Borg Sinaban, Bru Sim-Nada, Camz Dagal, Carlorozy Clemente, Charlene Villamor, Claudine Delfin, Daniel Tingcunco, Diana Madelo, Don Mikel Fumar, Elbert Or, Galera Fernandez, Gica Tam, Harry Monzon, Isa Natividad, Jericho Moral, Jonathan Ranola, Kevin Makasiar, Kevin Roque, Koi Carreon, Kora Dandan-Albano, Lorra Elena Angbue-Te, Lou Pineda-Arada, Luis Chua, Mariness Rivera, Mickey Velarde, Mika Bacani, Nikki Radan, Raine Sarmiento, Rex Aguilar, Rian Gonzales, Robert A. Alejandro, Sergio Bumatay III, and Tippy Go, among many others. Each artist will be presenting a unique pair of 6 x 8 in. artworks; a premium gift idea for this coming Christmas season and an excellent start for any aspiring art collector.
