Arturo R. Luz

National Artist for Visual Arts (1997)
(November 20, 1926 – May 26, 2021)

Arturo Luz is known for his minimalism in his works of art. His works (whether in painting or sculpture) is characterized by his use of geometric shapes, fine lines and a muted color palette. The resulting composition of his works achieved balance and elegance.  He established the Luz Gallery, one of the most prestigious galleries at the time, providing a platform for artists to showcase their works when the Philippine Art Gallery was in its decline. He professionalized museum and gallery practices in the country by applying his knowledge and observations from visiting a lot of museums abroad. Luz became the first director of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila, and founding director of both the Design Center of the Philippines and the Museum of Philippine Art.
