“Sometimes, what we want is not what is best for us. But we are fulfilled when we learn to go with the flow.”

Luis Balmes is over 50 years old. His art is inspired by the philosophy of working with life, open to the chances presented, rather than imposing upon it his personal wishes and desires. Half a century of personal experience and reflection on three generations of his family’s history has taught him that suffering happens when desires go unfulfilled. Peace comes only when we accept what life lays out for us. This has shaped him both as artist and as person.

Working with paint, canvas, and brush has made him aware that paint is alive. Each paint differs: in life cycle, drying time, application, and temperament. Encountering one another, some mix well and some don’t; but each meeting can never be replicated. Peace came to Luis Balmes only when spontaneity coaxes his hand to collaborate with the material. The result is effortless—he achieves depth in a multiplicity of expression of colors and textures, but united in a singularity. This encapsulates what the sage Lao Tzu said: “Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you.” This is the essence of each painting made by Luisito Balmes, and this is what he wants to share with the world.
