Steph Alvarez (b. 1989) is a self-taught artist based in Metro Manila. A graduate of the University of Sto. Tomas, Alvarez was a licensed architect by profession who eventually focused full-time on art making. Her works are heavily expressed through watercolor, whose themes are influenced by her personal commentaries on human nature, redemption, faith, as well as a growing finesse on the female form, flora and the narratives that accompany them. A number of her works are currently conveyed through intricately painted pieces of paper made to look like rose petals which reflect her mother’s garden and certain Marian beliefs. Though also adept in graphite and gouache, Alvarez’s introduction of her petal-artworks is slowly distinguishing her in her various participations in exhibits all over Metro Manila since 2014, with “Return of Saturn” being her first solo exhibition.
