The dreamer’s reality: a hopeful road, or a cynical paradox?
We speak about dreamers as if they were totally separate from us. While we live through our reality, they seem to dwell in their own, wading through foreign waters and unknown paths. If dreams transcend reality, then what kind of reality do dreamers face day to day? Who are the dreamers in our lives? Who are the ones who dare to look up when reality works so hard to keep them fixed to the ground?
In Thea Quiachon’s words, “It takes a strong soul to keep dreaming.” Her show, “A Glimpse Into The Dreamer’s Reality,” attempts to illustrate what life is like for these souls that straddle the line between the mundane waking world and the silent, if not cautious optimism that guides them through. Quiachon’s textured figures mirror this duality, as waves of thick paint lend all the more depth to each form, while obscuring any definite sense of semblance. We watch these brave dreamers try to navigate their realities from a bird’s eye view, observing their singular yet determined journeys. Quiachon, meanwhile, invites us to contemplate our own. What can we learn from the dreamers around us? And in turn, what kind of dreamers can we become?
Through the uncertainty, we can only move forward and continue to hope.
