The Star Club
The self is a recurrent focal point across the body of work of Kim Borja. But in this solo exhibition, the visual artist ventures outwards and turns her gaze to relationships that transcend the individual—friends, family, and support systems—forming what she calls “The Star Club.” Borja describes this as a “group of dreamers aiming for their own stars,” but at the same time helping each other achieve their aspirations.
In the artist’s world-building, whimsical figures and fluorescent hues morph into intimacy. Such vivid imagery parallels the wealth of connections that form the foundation of the present series. Across her canvases are quiet acts of companionship: an embrace, a silent company, among a few. For inasmuch as dreaming is a personal endeavor, the artist asserts that it is a venture rightfully driven by others as well—a collective pursuit, sustained for and by mutual care. For Borja, The Star Club is an invocation of “what we want to be in life,” a tribute to the people who made this journey possible.
