Multiawarded Japanese visual artist Hideo Tanaka presents a new series of acrylic-on-canvas still life paintings in his latest solo exhibition with Galerie Stephanie. In this collection, Tanaka maintains his affinity with both hyperrealism and surrealism and continues to exercise the pictorial restraint that has defined his recent works. Suspending time and motion, the scenes depicted on his canvases are nodes of flux: distillations of change, their passage left to our own inferences. He approaches the operation by breaking narratives into distinct junctures and invoking them through their antitheses—movement through stillness, depth through restraint, and resonance through silence.
