Every Day/One Day

In Every Day/One Day, Jem Magbanua meditates on the rhythms of time and duration. This exploration first came about during the pandemic when her concept of time was challenged, stretched out, and frozen due to the prolonged waiting and unknowing that the circumstances brought about. She returns to the exploration of this visual language once again, now through the lens of motherhood and the complete shift in her understanding of time and structure. Yet rather than surrendering, she uses these moments to learn and develop as a person capable of viewing the world from a newly transformed perspective.

With a combination of fluid abstract brushstrokes and constructed symmetrical grids, Jem Magbanua creates reflective pieces that discuss the sporadic and malleable movement of time. The resemblance of a calendar in her works serves as an inspiration to Jem. Through the geometrical patterns that portray each day, it all connects into a symbol of her parental motivation – a visual representation dedicated to the love and growing life of her daughter.
