The Theory of Balance

“Happiness is not a matter of intensity but of balance, order, rhythm, and harmony.”
— Thomas Merton

In this exhibition, Jomike Tejido explores the universal pursuit of balance—both as a concept and a necessity. From ancient philosophies like yin and yang to modern psychological theories, the search for equilibrium has shaped human experiences across cultures and generations. In “Theory of Balance”, Tejido narrates how balance is an all-encompassing element and goal in shaping life, found in architecture, food, beliefs and social behaviors.

Tejido’s latest body of work embodies this theme through a shift in his artistic approach. Known for his vibrant palettes, he now embraces earthy tones and subdued hues, grounding his pieces in a more introspective, human-centered warmth, while still maintaining his signature organic shapes, curious details, and cohesive abstract facets. His paintings for this exhibition transcended into a meditation on the contrasts that define our lives—achievement and failure, joy and sorrow, intention and chance. This symbiotic dualities are further defined in his series of collage works on canvas, portraying a synthesis of media (textile, paper, canvas, acrylic, and oil pastel) collectively portraying balance coming from varied elements.

Complementing the paintings, his series of kinetic stabiles (entitled “Pinnacle of Kinetic and Potential” and “Constant Pursuit of Balance”)—crafted from resin, brass, and metal—offer a tangible metaphor for life’s delicate equilibrium. These sculptures invite interaction, responding to the slightest touch or the whim of the wind, mirroring the way we navigate change.

Through this exhibition, Tejido presents balance not as a static state, but as an ongoing, dynamic process—one that requires both control and surrender, action and acceptance. It is in this attempt that balance presents itself as an essential flavor of life: that is in the existence of imbalances that we discover growth, and in the journey to achieve balance is where we discover purpose.
